On May 2, 2012, the Town of Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department along with help from the Long Lake Highway Department in Long Lake and Raquette Lake collaborated with the Central Adirondack Association to participate in region-wide Community Pride Day.

Great weather ushered in the day with comfortable temperatures settling over the area making it ideal to be outside and cleaning up. Over 90 volunteers from Long Lake and Raquette Lake combed area roadways collecting debris dropped over the winter. Volunteers included local residents, Frank and Lorraine Pine, Danielle Gagnier, Michelle Donnelly, Paul Roalsvig, Kelly Black, Jodi Hartle, Carlene Bulloch, George Bulloch, Clarice Glandon, Sheri Cook, Sam Keller and Luke Keller, the entire student body of Long Lake Central School and over 16 volunteers from the Long Lake Central School Faculty and Staff.

Roads covered included Route 28N, Kickerville Rd, Endion Rd, Rice Road, Dock Road, Owl’s Head Lane, Northpoint Road, South Hill Road and from the Raquette Lake School to the Village Green. Over one hundred bags of garbage were collected. Volunteers found debris including discarded batteries, beer cans, cigarette packs, food wrappers, broken bottles and several worn clothing items. Carlene Bulloch found two cars dating from the 1940’s along the edge of Northpoint Road. Early estimates project over 1400 pounds of garbage was collected.

Volunteers gear up with trash bags, safety vests, gloves, garbage picking sticks donated by Doug Blodgett and are given assignments. At noon volunteers met at the Long Lake Diner and Raquette Lake Tap Room to enjoy a delicious lunch sponsored by local businesses.

Local businesses are encouraged to send employees out to assist in cleanup efforts. Participating businesses included: The Shamrock Motel and Cottages, Long Lake Fish and Game Club, Paul H. Roalsvig, Attorney, Long Lake Lions Club, Shortridge Landscaping, The Raquette Lake Association, The Hedges, The Long Lake Association, the Long Lake Fire Department, The Long Lake Diner/Owls Head Pub, and the Raquette Lake Tap Room.

With reports of snow and a nor’easter it seemed the story this morning would be weather, but upon checking my personal facebook page and town worker Chris Hample texted “I just saw a Moose swimming in Jennings Park Pond” I knew it was happening… NOW.

Hopped in the car to do a moose chase. Where to go. Skirted down route 30 towards the town beach keeping eyes peeled, nothing. Saw some action at the Adirondack Hotel, nothing. Headed back to the town office and grabbed an associate to keep an eye out and finally met success.

Spotted it in the parking lot at Long Lake Central School, where it then traveled down the dirt road to the ball field, it crossed the ball field, hopped back into Jennings Park Pond and headed towards the post office.

Things that run through your mind when chasing a moose. “Will it charge me?” “Why is he looking at me that way?” “He looks like a stump while he swims across the pond” “Ummm.. is that a he or a she?”

It was a pretty incredible sight to behold. First time ever sighting. And to think when I was a kid they used to say there were no turkeys and no moose. Glad things have turned around.

Fishing is a year round sport in the Adirondacks and both Long Lake and Raquette Lake should be included on your Adirondack fishing destination list for 2012. In 2009 the largest Brook Trout in New York State was caught in Raquette Lake and we’re pretty sure there are more where that came from.

Fishing the waters of Long Lake and Raquette Lake is fishing in pristine surroundings. It’s fishing in solitude. It’s fishing in a place where heritage strains of trout are still found in the hidden depths of some of our bodies of water.

Long Lake is a widening of the Raquette River and is 14 miles long, a size of about 3904 Acres. The Mean Depth is 13 feet and an average depth of Long Lake ranges from 15-28 feet and at it’s deepest it boasts a depth of over 40 feet at a hole located at the north end of Long Lake, but if you don’t know where it is, you’ll have to come up and ask a local, because everyone likes to keep their favorite fishing spots a secret.

Long Lake is home to Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Brown Bullhead, Yellow Perch and Brook Trout.

Raquette Lake boasts over 100 miles of shoreline with lots of bays and nooks and crannies to find a spot to drop a line. The lake is the second largest natural lake in the Adirondacks and is approximately six miles long, with a maximum depth of just under 100 feet. It is also the source of the Raquette River.

Raquette Lake is home to the following species of fish brook trout, lake trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, landlocked salmon, northern pike, chain pickerel, perch and bullhead. This lake is stocked yearly with lake trout and brook trout.

Freshwater fishing trips can be a great way to enjoy the abundance of lakes, rivers and streams of the Long Lake, NY region. Long Lake is located in the Adirondacks in Upstate New York, two-hours north of Albany, three hours south of Montreal and a days drive from New York City or Western New York.

Planning ahead is always a good idea. Pick up fishing gear at area stores, in Long Lake Hoss’s Country Corner is located at the intersection of NYS Route 30 and 28N and the Adirondack Trading Post (opening in June) will offer live bait, lures, and a wide variety of fishing equipment for the whole family. Not to mention bug dope. Yes, it’s true, we’re not saying it’s super fun to be here during the height of bug season (which doesn’t arrive until Mid to late May and ends mid-June, depending on the season) but we are saying it requires a certain amount of fortitude to withstand the critters, so arriving during early Trout Season which opens April 1st, is always a good idea. We say beat the bugs! Or Don’t fear the bugs. They aren’t as bad as the Green Heads that attack on the Jersey Shore (just sayin’)

Fishing Licenses can be purchased at the Long Lake Town Clerks Office, 1130 Deerland Road, 518-624-3088 Monday thru Thursday 7am – 2pm and at Hoss’s Country Corner. Call 518-624-2481 for hours.

Spring Fishing in the Adirondacks and Long Lake and Raquette Lake is always a terrific time to get out on the water. The crowds are light and the private fishing areas are plentiful and blissfully serene. Many area ponds, lakes and streams are stocked with fish.

For a boat rental contact Long Lake Marina, call ahead. The ice is out early this season, but if you are looking for a smallish water craft, call and they will arrange to put one in the water for you. If it’s one thing we have up here in the spring, it’s good customer service, you’ll get the attention you need and all your questions answered. www.longlakemarina.com at 518-624-2266 or in Raquette Lake, www.birdsboats.com Bird’s Marina 315-354-4441 or Burke’s Marina www.burkesmarinainc.com at 315-354-4623

Fishing is an unsurpassed Adirondack outdoor recreational activity for all ages. Kids under the age of 16 don’t need a fishing license. New York fishing licenses for those over the age of 16 are currently $29 annually for New York residents. Residents over the age of 70 pay just $5 annually. If you are out of state, the rates are a bit higher, call our local licensing office or check out NYS DEC website.

Long Lake and Raquette Lake offer unique boat access rental properties, motels, hotels, cottages and cabins on the lake which are ideal for a fishing expedition. For information about cabins or cottages on Long Lake or check out what’s available on the Raquette Lake Lodging page at Raquette Lake Lodging and for great Long Lake accommodations check out Long Lake Lodging

Baitfish Regulations for Purchased Baitfish and Green List Baitfish

The following baitfish are the only species that can be purchased and used in any water body in New York where it is legal to use fish as bait. These baitfish are commonly used throughout New York and are not considered to be a threat to other native New York fish species (except for trout in waters where baitfish use is prohibited). Limiting the use of baitfish to the Green List will help prevent the accidental introduction of unwanted species.
• Golden shiner
• Northern redbelly dace
• Emerald shiner
• Blacknose dace
• Common shiner
• Longnose dace
• Spottail shiner
• White sucker
• Banded killifish
• Northern hogsucker
• Fathead minnow
• Creek chub
• Bluntnose minnow
• Fallfish
• Logperch
• Eastern silvery minnow
Use, Possession and Transportation of Purchased Baitfish
Certified Baitfish
Certified baitfish are those that have been tested and found to be free of specified diseases. Use of certified baitfish helps prevent the spread of fish diseases. Certified baitfish purchased from a bait dealer can be transported overland in a motorized vehicle and used on any body of water where it is legal to do so.
For baitfish to be considered certified, the seller must provide a receipt that contains:
• the seller’s name,
• date of sale,
• the species of fish, and
• the number of each species sold.
The buyer must retain that receipt while in possession of the baitfish. Baitfish without a receipt or with a receipt that is older than 10 days shall be considered uncertified bait.

If you catch a Large Fish
If You Catch a Large Fish
Each year, New York anglers catch a number of trophy-sized fish. If you catch a really big fish, DEC wants to hear about it. You may qualify for an award in our Angler Achievement Awards Program. The program recognizes exceptional catches in several categories: annual award, catch and release, and state record.
An angler whose fish breaks the current state record receives a custom engraved plaque, an Angler Achievement Award lapel pin, and a Certificate of Achievement.
To participate in New York State’s Angler Achievement Awards Program, simply follow these guidelines:
• Fish must be taken by angling in New York State waters in accordance with New York State fishing regulations.
• Fish must meet the minimum qualifying weight or length for that species and the entered category.
• Fish entered in the Annual Award and State Record categories must be weighed on a certified scale by the owner of the scale or an employee, and must be witnessed by at least one other person.
• Fish submitted as a potential State Record entry must be identified by a DEC biologist or a designee.
• Qualifying fish must be entered on an official entry form or facsimile.
• All entries must be accompanied by a clear, sideview photograph of the fish or the angler with the fish.
• Entry forms must be received by DEC’s Bureau of Fisheries within 30 days of the catch.
NYSDEC, Bureau of Fisheries, 625 Broadway, Albany, New York 12233-4753.

Entry forms are available at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7727.html

All winter long you’ve thought about what you could do to get a little extra cash in your pocket and start the business you’ve always dreamed about. Maybe you want to make your own beer and sell it locally, or you are an excellent furniture maker or you want to do a retail business. Whatever kind of business you want to start, this is your chance to educate yourself and find out new ways to get started and have a support system in place to keep you on track.

The Hamilton County Economic Development Office will be hosting an informational session on 2012 Microenterprise Grants on Monday, April 30th, 2012 at the Long Lake Town Hall, 1204 Main Street, Long Lake, NY at 7pm. Grant funding is available for entrepreneurs seeking to create jobs and small businesses in Hamilton County.

Hamilton County Economic Development is seeking small entrepreneurial businesses to apply for funding for a new business or an already established business with five employees or less. Criteria to apply for the grant range from specific proof of low to moderate income for Hamilton County ($47,840 for household of 4) or the ability to show that the business created at least one job for a low to moderate income household. (Per NYS and Federal Requirements)

With a grant application other requirements include filing a grant application, compliance and ongoing documentation of the funding used for your business. It will be ongoing with an application for funding. Other specific criteria for this grant and more information is available at hamiltoncounty.com and click on Economic Development and Microenterprise Grants Quick Facts. It outlines eligibility, criteria and funding opportunities.

Funds are available for machinery, furniture, fixtures, inventory and equipment, or capital to purchase real property. Construction and remodeling are not eligible for funding. This is not a loan program, it’s a grant program. You have to pay back the money if you do not fulfill the obligations of the grant, but there are obligations including education, filing documentation, background credit checks and a business plan are required to prove an on-going commitment to this unique and exciting economic program.

The goal of the microenterprise program is to create jobs and to sustain jobs, and it’s a partnership between private enterprise and government. While funding is available, the applications are competitive and training is imperative to set yourself up in a business that can succeed. All applicants are accountable and responsible to follow through on the obligations of their application.

Grants are available ranging from a minimum of $5000 and cannot exceed 90% of the total cost of the project. The total funding available to disperse in Hamilton County is $164,000.

What do you have to do? Come to the meeting, apply for the grant and take 8- two hour entrepreneur training sessions – FOR FREE. 16 hours. It’s a lot of work, but the pay off can mean a new future for you and your family.

The life skills you receive from a 16 hour course will be useful, not only for starting your new business, but learning tangible business and marketing skills to help you in all areas of your life, managing your home finances, and to dispel the fear and myth about doing business in New York State.

The training is a great guide to help you avoid common pitfalls associated with starting a new business. Receive practical skills, how and why to write a business plan and generate new ideas about how to make it succeed.

Does a business plan have to be perfect? No, it’s a projection, it’s a goal. You’ll learn how to market your business effectively, learn about opportunities for additional funding, meet other entrepreneurs who may just offer some insights and a fresh point of view to benefit your business.

If you apply, what’s the commitment? The commitment is for the entire grant period. The work doesn’t end after finishing entrepreneurial training, that is when it begins. You will have to follow the guidelines of the grant, provide documentation for hires and business expenses. But DON’T LET THAT SCARE YOU OFF! Blood sweat and tears is part of the game. Establishing a new business today can give you greater opportunity in the future.

Come out to the 2012 Hamilton County Microenterprise Grant Informational Meeting on Monday, April 30th at the Long Lake Town Hall at 7pm.

If you’re in business, you’ve just created a job! In Hamilton County, that’s a huge deal. Success equals survival!

Don’t be put off by the hard work and investment it will take to procure these funds. This is an opportunity to make your dream come true and to give back to your community by investing time and commitment into your business dream. Nothing is free, and yes there are hoops and obstacles, but take the first step and come on out and find out if you can make it work for you.

Ernie Williams celebrated the 4th of July in 2011 in Long Lake, NY. A tribute to the spirit of America and Blues Music. His genuine love of music and his fans was palpable. He set up shop outside the back of his van and signed autographs at the Long Lake Town Beach before his performance.

He celebrated life, love, music and the American dream. Much love to his family, friends and fans. We will miss him.

From the AP Times Union. Legendary blues musician Ernie Williams, who recently celebrated his 87th birthday, died Wednesday after suffering a massive heart attack, according to Cohoes Mayor John McDonald III.

Williams, a Cohoes resident, was a fixture on the local music scene. He earned a dedicated following through his performances with The Ernie Williams Band, formerly known as the Wildcats.

From 1991 to 2001, Mark Emanatian played lead guitar with Williams’ band, touring the U.S. and Canada.

Emanatian recalled how serious Williams was about music and spoke of the times they played multiple gigs in one day.

But Williams was a staunch believer in giving back to the community through programs aimed at teaching people black history and by performing benefits for hunger.

“He was charming, he had a huge smile, he loved people, he loved to tell jokes and he loved kids,” Emanatian said.

Williams, a native of Virginia, moved to Harlem and later to Albany.

Writer/Performer Peter Michael Marino presents a comic autopsy on his $6 million West End musical fiasco Desperately Seeking Susan in DESPERATELY SEEKING THE EXIT. Directed by Obie Award winner John Clancy, performances of this site-specific, solo tell-all comedy begin May 3 at the Triple Crown Underground. The American premiere will be followed by the UK premiere at Manchester, England’s Taurus Bar (presented by Vertigo Productions) and a run at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

In 2007, American playwright Peter Michael Marino wrote a musical based on the film “Desperately Seeking Susan” featuring the music of Blondie. It opened on London’s West End…and closed a month later. DESPERATELY SEEKING THE EXIT offers a behind-the-scenes peek at how this £4 million musical was made and unmade: hatching the idea, deals with MGM, Debbie Harry and even Madonna; the workshops, the previews, the scathing reviews and the closing night. Once you’re in, there’s no way out!

Peter Michael Marino is a writer, actor, director and teacher. He received the 2010 and 2011 Backstage Reader’s Choice Award for Favorite Comedy Teacher for his acclaimed “Flying Solo” classes at The PIT. He also received the Back Stage Bistro Award for his cabaret spoof, Lance Jonathan: More About Me! He is the co-writer of the lesbian pulp homage Hollywood Nurses. He has directed and developed shows with Delilah Dix (Ars Nova, Laurie Beechman Theatre and Edinburgh Fringe), Mark Giordano’s Mad Man (The PIT), Sheila Head’s Head Games (IO West, Ars Nova), and Alicia Levy’s Chickapalooza (The PIT, Ars Nova). As a performer, he appeared in STOMP for five years off-Broadway and on tour, as well as in numerous regional productions and workshops.

John Clancy is an Obie Award-winning director, playwright, and a partner in Clancy Productions, an acclaimed international theatrical touring and production company. He is the founding Artistic Director of The Present Company and a founding Artistic Director of The New York International Fringe Festival. He has directed six Scotsman Fringe First winning productions at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, including Americana Absurdum (Brian Parks), Cincinnati (Don Nigro), Horse Country (C.J. Hopkins), screwmachine/eycandy (C.J. Hopkins) and his own Fatboy. Both Horse Country and Cincinnati went on to win The Best of the Fringe Award at the Adelaide Fringe in 2004. In 2002 he received a Glasgow Herald Angel for excellence in direction at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. John was awarded The New York Magazine Award in 1997 for “creativity, enterprise and vision”.

DESPERATELY SEEKING THE EXIT July 6th at 9:30PM at Quackenbush’s Long View Wilderness Lodge, 681 Deerland Road, Long Lake, NY. Tickets are $15 available on a first-come, first served basis; no advance reservations will be taken. A full bar is available.
