Saturday June 5th, 2010, Jim & Mary Jo Waite with the assistance of the B-Team (the Parks & Rec Crew) set up a tent, table, snacks and a grill on the edge of Jennings Park Pond to host the annual Kid’s Fishing Derby in Long Lake. Families from all over New York State arrive to participate. Local residents, families from Syracuse and Clifton Park gathered on the shoreline along route 30 and along the Spillway. Worms on the hooks and let the games begin. There are prizes for Longest Trout and Longest Non-Trout, Best Fish Story… one of which involved an alien taking the fish away and only leaving a feather behind. Prizes ranged from tackle boxes, fishing poles and gift certificates from area businesses. Cabela’s got in the action, providing sponsorship for many of the prizes including hats, tackle, tools and huge coffee mugs. The weather was windy, a stroller went into the pond, luckily the baby wasn’t in it! There were 35 participants and it grows every year. It’s a casual event. Great for grandparents, families, friends. No registration, just good old fashion fun and an Adirondack hobby is born. There is nothing more thrilling than reeling in the big one!
