St. William’s on Long Point Annual Chicken BBQ

On Sunday, July 26th, The Annual Chicken BBQ will be held at St. William’s on Long Point in Raquette Lake. St. William’s on Long Point will have their annual chicken BBQ, $12.00/person and a silent auction with a large variety of items. The proceeds will be used for the continuing operation and restoration of St. William’s. Boat transportation is available from Raquette Lake town dock at 12:30 pm. The BBQ includes a variety of delicious salads, beans and desserts and the best chicken you have ever tasted prepared by our experienced crew of volunteers. US Waterski Show Team Visits Long Lake in 2015

Looking for an exciting event to take the whole family to? Look no further than the US Water Ski Show Team at the Long Lake Town Beach. On Saturday, July 18th, come out and witness pyramids, jumps, stunts and barefoot waterskiing! Demos begin at 10 a.m., with the main event beginning at 3 p.m.

Founded in 1968, the US Water Ski Show Team is based out of Scotia, N.Y., and has a proud history of over 40 years of exciting crowds across the northeast! This family oriented organization promises to knock your socks off with a high-caliber water ski show.

Crowds are invited to grab a beach towel, find a comfy spot, and enjoy this showcase held along the waterfront from Long Lake Town Beach to Helms Aero Plane Base. Free parking is available at the Long Lake Central School parking lot located on School Street off of Main Street, Route 30, and along Becker Road behind the Town Hall. Spectators are asked not to use St. Henry’s parking lot as services are scheduled at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

In addition to Waterski demo’s starting at 10am there will be a Cardboard Box Boat Building and Float Competition on the Beach starting at 11am with the Float Off at 1pm. The Town will provide one roll of duct tape and cardboard, but participants welcome to bring their own pre-built boat, but it must not have any floatation devices or plastic in the boat. Pure cardboard and tape only to keep it a level playing field. This tradition now in its 6th year is not to be missed entertainment and helps round out a spectacular beach day in Long Lake!

Claire Black, Classical Piano, will give a concert at the United Methodist Church in Long
Lake on Thursday, July 9, at 7:30 p.m. A native of Long Lake, Claire now resides in
South Burlington, Vermont, where she is very active performing classical music.

Ms. Black has performed extensively as a soloist and collaborator throughout North
America. She enjoys frequent collaborations with flutist Laurel Ann Maurer and her chamber group Vermont Virtuosi, and hopes to establish many more fruitful partnerships in the area. She also freelances as an accompanist for soloists and various choral groups, including the Burlington Choral Society. Ms. Black spent the previous eight years in Cleveland, Ohio, where she worked as a staff accompanist at Baldwin Wallace University, accompanied several area choirs, and trained at the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM). She received a master of music degree in piano performance under the tutelage of Margarita Shevchenko. Her deep interest and commitment to chamber music have led to abundant experience, including many years of performance tours with the Cialde Quintet and with her cello-piano Elegua Duo.

Along with performing, Ms. Black loves teaching and feels fortunate to have a flourishing piano studio at home. She is also a proud new member of Vermont Music Teachers Association. Claire previously taught via the Oberlin Community Music School and at CIM’s Summer Sonata festival for young pianist.

When she is not working, Ms. Black enjoys attending concerts of all sorts, reading fiction, making her garden grow, and exploring the Adirondack wilderness with her partner Andrew.

Ms. Black last performed in Long Lake in 2012 as a member of the Elegua Duo.

A reception to meet the artist will follow the concert. This concert is part of a series presented by the Long Lake Friends of Music and is partially funded by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Regrant Program. In Hamilton County, the Decentralization Program is administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, located in Blue Mountain Lake. For Heaven’s Sake in Concert, St. Williams Summer Concert Series

7 p.m., For Heaven’s Sake, In concert at St. Williams on Long Point, Raquette Lake. Based in Watertown, New York, For Heaven’s Sake is an award-winning quartet that has been entertaining audiences of all ages since 1994, singing four-part harmony in the barbershop style. Four fun and fantastic ladies, Lynn Blakeney (lead), Mary Ann Wert (baritone), Katie (Wert) Taylor (bass) and Lorie (Wert) Autote (tenor) perform a healthy dose of good ‘ole’ barbershop harmony! Their natural blend and tight harmonies propelled them forward in competitions and within two years of joining together, For Heaven’s Sake went on to win Harmony, Inc.’s International Quartet Championships in Saint John, New Brunswick. As the 1996 International Quartet Champions they are commonly referred to as “Harmony Queens.” They hold the distinct honor of being the “oldest” active Queen quartet in Harmony, Inc….ouch!

Join the Ladies Auxiliary at 1pm, July 11th at the Village Green for a fundraiser featuring music by Squirrel Murphy featuring local favorite Matt Grainger. In addition to the live music, enjoy baked goods, a Chinese Raffle and a 50/50 to support the Ladies Auxiliary as well as vendors including Pampered Chef, Scentsy, 31 and more.

Look for Squirrel Murphy to play a little bit of everything from classic rock to modern country with a few surprises. Their slogan is “the songs you forgot you remembered” The band has been together for ten years and Matt says his musical influences include Neil Young, Dan Folgelberg, Crosby Stills and Nash, but he plays everything, including metal. Look for Squirrel Murphy and Matt Grainger to play additional dates around the area including June 28th and July 4th on the WW Durant.

Long Lake NY Youth Center Opening 2015

The Town of Long Lake returns with the Long Lake Youth Center on Tuesday’s thru Thursday evenings July 7th through August 13th. Youth ages 10 – 16 are invited to join in the fun up at the Geiger Arena located at Mt. Sabattis Recreation Center at 6 Pavilion Way, across from the Post Office. Free Hiking Trips Offered with Certified Guides in Long Lake NY

The Town of Long Lake is coordinating six hikes, July through September, with NYS certified guides Joan Collins and Spencer Morrissey. These two experienced hikers will take you on hikes of varying lengths and levels of difficulty through some of the classic and lesser known Adirondack trails.

Spencer Morrissey is a 46er, a bushwack 46er, and Adirondack 100 finisher. He has climbed 675 different Adirondack peaks. Morrissey is proficient in GPS, map and compass navigation. In addition to year-round Adirondack excursions, Morrissey has also been a team leader of a Mt. Rainer expedition and for Mount Adams in Washington State, and he has completed New Hampshire’s 4000 footers, Death Valley expeditions as well as a vast resume of winter excursions. Morrissey is the author of “The Other 54” and “Adirondack Trail Runner.” He also writes for the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Town of Long Lake’s website,

Joan Collins is a New York State licensed bird guide, bird walk leader, writer, and speaker on ornithology topics. She has led walks and made presentations for many organizations including Audubon, the Adirondack Mountain Club, and the New York State Ornithological Association. Joan also belongs to the ranks of the intrepid Adirondack 46ers (having climbed all 46 peaks in the Adirondacks over 4,000 feet).
