20 Reasons to come up to Long Lake & Raquette Lake in the Winter

Don’t let the weather fool you into thinking that we don’t have lots of activities happening in and around our area. Check out this list of activities happening in our area kicking off this weekend Feb 27th – March 5th. There is definitely something for everyone. Look on the bright-side, the roads have been pretty clear all winter so the driving is a breeze!

Would the Beatles Tweet?

I would wager The Beatles would have a publicist on board the team tweeting, snapchatting, and instagramming away, Paul McCartney seems active on social media. Ask them yourself (well at least ask the fellows who look and sound a lot like them) “Hey Jude, The Tribute” take their characters seriously and will answer any and all questions as if they are the real John, Paul, Ringo and George. These guys look and sound just like the fab four and emulate them live. This is your chance to enjoy a live version of a Beatles Concert, up close and personal in Long Lake, NY Adirondacks, USA.

The Town of Long Lake announces Hey Jude The Tribute in concert on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 7:30pm at the Long Lake Town Hall located at 1204 Main Street, NYS Route 30 in Long Lake, NY. Hey Jude the will perform a live concert that is a virtual musical history tour through the entire ten year career of The Beatles.

Tom Raider portrays John Lennon and has spearheaded the Hey Jude The Tribute as a labor of love. The band has been performing in the Capital Region for approximately two and a half years. Band members include Tom Raider as John Lennon, Brad Jarvis as Paul McCartney, Rick Bedrosian as George Harrison, Don Ackerman as Ringo Star and the fifth Beatle, keyboardist Rich Coogan.

The band are fans of the Beatles’ entire musical spectrum ranging from the early Sullivan years to the famous Abbey Road. The concerts replicate the unique look and sound of the Beatles’ from the costumes, mop top haircuts and imported Liverpool Boots to the Rickenbacker, Gretsh, Hofner and Epiphone guitars, Vox amps and Ludwig drums, perfecting every detail of the show.

The Town of Long Lake will provide a local shuttle bus service to and from homes, lodgings and restaurants within the town limits from 5pm until Midnight to anyone interested in dining out at an area restaurant or going out after the show. The Long Lake Fish and Game Club will be hosting the Lake Eaton Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday, February 13th. Registration and Rules. Raquette Lake is gearing up for a Winter Carnival Weekend Feb 12th through 13th. The difference for this central Adirondack location is the lack of snow. But what we lack in snow turns out to be unusual ice conditions for these communitites. (just so you know we are keeping fingers crossed for more snow on Thursday)

For a FULL overview of all the latest happenings in both Long Lake and Raquette Lake, please check out our on-line calendar.

The Northern NY Vintage Snosled Racing Circuit will be on tap to host vintage snowmobile races Saturday, Feb 13th on Jennings Park Pond in Long Lake from Noon until 4pm. The race organizers had to come to Long Lake as we already have a pre-built, plowed track and racing was canceled in New Hampshire. The Long Lake Lions Club will charge admissions and the door split will help off-set the cost of insurance for participating racers.

Ladies Frying Pan Toss returns to Raquette Lake on Saturday, Feb 13th. Need a room, call 518.624.3077 for info on lodging for Raquette Lake Winter Carnival

Raquette Lake Winter Carnival will be boasting a return of a classic event favorite from years past, with ice skating instruction with Michael Bartow, Saturday, Feb 13th at 12pm – 2pm. The lake is skateable. While the town used to plow a rink many many years ago, it hasn’t seen a skatable surface in a long time. Kat Forsell, Raquette Lake’s event coordinator is enthusiastic about re-introducing a fan favorite to the weekend.

As far as other lake conditions on Raquette Lake Suny Cortland reports, “The ice road is 9 inches thick and gaining. It has also snowed a bit, allowing some winter activities to resume. We had the cold and ice, but no snow to speak of.” So that’s good news. More snow would be nice.

Winter Update on Long and Raquette Lake

On Tuesday Feb 9, 2016, the New York Times published an article titled “In Unfrozen Northern New York, Winter Isn’t the Same” . This winter season has brought forth a variety of fluctuating conditions to the Adirondacks resulting in inconsistent ice conditions and challenges for winter recreation.

Long Lake as seen on Monday, Feb 8th with a light coating of snow.

Long Lake as seen on Monday, Feb 8th with a light coating of snow.

Skating on the lake is not recommended which is why the Town of Long Lake boasts the Geiger Arena Rink located off Deerland Road at 6 Pavilion Way (across the street from the Post Office) The Geiger Rink is manned by fan favorite Bobby Helms, an avid ice fisherman and hockey player. He’s built the ice surface two or three times this winter and he anticiaptes old-man winter is finally here for good. Look for Adult Ice Hockey coming up on Thursdays. Call for conditions and hours 518.624-3031. Bobby will be open daily during President’s Week.

If you are seeking ice skating fun in Raquette Lake, look no further. Michael Bartow will be teaching ice skating at the Raquette Lake Winter Carnival starting at noon on February 13th near the site of the Raquette Lake Winter Carnival. Bring your own skates!

Long Lake is a widening in the Raquette River and there is strong current in and around inlets/outlets, brooks and under the bridge near the Long Lake beach. Stay away from brooks, streams, inlets/outlets, shorelines and dock bubblers.

Outlook for weekend looks cold.

Lake Eaton Ice Fishing Derby

Update on Conditions:

This could result in frost bite, hypothermia if precautions not taken. Bundle up, layer and be prepared. The Long Lake Warming Hut/Weigh in station will be available for contestants to warm up. 4-wheelers and snowmobiles will be allowed on lake, but no trucks.

The Long Lake Fish and Game Club will be sponsoring an Ice Fishing Derby on Lake Eaton on Saturday, February 13th, 2016 from 7am until 3pm. Registration will open at 6am to 7am at the Mt. Bring Your Own Chainsaw to Raquette!

Punxsutawney Phil did NOT see his shadow at Gobbler’s Knob today, Feb. 2, 2016, Groundhog Day, and so Spring is just around the corner, but in Long Lake and Raquette Lake, we like to disagree.

While Mother Nature has been sparing with her precipitation this year, we make sure to plan plenty of activities to help pass the time of the long winter months.

Things to do in February, fan favorites are the Raquette Lake Winter Carnival, recently featured by I Love NY’s Twitter Feed!

I Love NY just featured Raquette Lake Winter Carnival in their Twitter Feed.

It’s an old fashioned small town tradition. Events range from Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, followed up by fun family activities on Saturday from sledding, skating, golf, frying pan toss, kids events, fireworks on Saturday Night. Sunday doesn’t disappoint with it’s pancake breakfast, and the infamous cross-cut and chainsaw competition. These events can happen no matter mother nature’s mood!

Friday Feb 12th
Spaghetti dinner 5pm till gone $10 to benefit the Raquette Lake Ladies Aux all you can eat, Fire Hall
Saturday Feb 13
11am Kid’s activities
12pm Ladies Frying pan toss $$$ prizes
12-2 Kids ice skating with instructor Michael Bartow
2 pm Magician in the Library – To be Confirmed! Check back!

(Personally I love when event copy reads “bring your own chainsaw” – just one more reason I love the ADK)

Now everyone always asks when the Ice Harvest in Raquette Lake is. Well, it’s again up to mother nature. We are going to be watching the temps and keeping an eye out, but the decision always rests with Raquette Lake Supply. They make the call and sometimes it’s a call that happens at the last minute. We promise to post the information when we get it. Keep an eye on the Facebook fan page for Raquette Lake for updates.

Long Lake kicks off President’s Week with an Ice Fishing Derby on Lake Eaton, a Basket Class and a week of fun-filled kids activities. For more details click on the calendar link, print it out and put on the fridge so you know what is coming up. We may be small, but we stay busy and everyone is invited to come play with us!

February Calendar of Events

Don’t forget to save the date, Hey Jude, a Beatles Tribute Band, returns to Long Lake on Saturday, March 5th at 7:30pm. Tickets available now $12 advance/ $15 at door.
