Long Lake/Raquette Lake In the News.

Black Bear, a movie directed by Lawrence Michael Levine, was shot in Long Lake, NY in the summer of 2019 and it made its Sundance Premiere on January 24, 2020.  Here are some links about the production and interviews with actress Aubrey Plaza, known for her role April Ludgate, the deadpan and apathetic intern from “Parks and Recreation” that served as the actress’ breakout role.

Long Lake Winter Carnival 2020 Wrap Up

With temperatures hovering around a brisk 11 degrees all day long, the Long Lake 18th Annual Winter Carnival saw an expansive turn out with new visitors, second homeowners and local residents flocking to the the Mt. Sabattis Recreation Center for the event.  As the day progressed the snow started to fall, adding to the collective outdoor wintry experience for the visitors. The Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department coordinated all the races and activities and hosted the event at the Mt. Sabattis Recreation Area.
 
Events kicked off with the coronation of the Moonlighters Snowmobile Club King and Queen, Eddie and Kitsy Rockstroh from Clifton Park and Long Lake, NY.  Other events played out throughout the day including an ice sculpture park by the Ice Farm out of Auburn, NY installing a variety of pieces including the Long Lake Selfie Board featuring Fur Trappers and a carving of Owls Head Mountain and the iconic Fire Tower.
 
The Long Lake Fire Department served a complimentary lunch throughout the day from inside the Geiger Arena warming hut.
 
The day ended with a bonfire and fireworks, followed up with Live Music at area venues.

Chazen Companies was on site meeting with the public about the Long Lake/Raquette Lake Comprehensive Plan throughout the afternoon. Survey’s were available and people offered their feedback on what they loved about the community and what they’d like the future to look like.
 

Long Lake Winter Carnival 2020

On Saturday, January 18th at noon, the Long Lake Winter Carnival will be held at Mt. Sabattis Recreation Center in Long Lake, NY located at 6 Pavilion Way off of Deerland Road, NYS Route 30.  Events begin with a bonfire, snowmobile parade, and coronation of the King and Queen.  Free activities are slated throughout the day.  The Cardboard Sled Races start at 1p.m. with prizes awarded for speed and overall award for Best Decoration.  Sleds can be made with cardboard, paint, wax and tape.  Racing categories are for individuals and for teams. The ice skating rink and sledding hill will be open throughout the day.

 


 
Other events throughout the day include a Wackiest Hat Contest, Town-Wide Photo, Kids Balloon Chase, Goalie’s Day Off, Men’s Feats of Strength, the Ladies Frying Pan Toss, and fireworks at 6:30p.m.. All events are free.
 
The Ice Farm, featuring the talents of award-winning ice sculptor Stan Kolonko, will be on site carving ice scupltures all day long. Businesses or organizations interested in sponsoring an ice carving or race prizes are asked to contact the Long Lake Parks and Recreation Office at 518-624-3077. Cash prizes provided by the Long Lake Fire Department, Long Lake Moonlighter’s Snowmobile Club and the Town of Long Lake.
 


In addition to the traditional events slated for the day, The Town of Long Lake will be hosting The Chazen Company at Mt. Sabattis. Chazen is in the process of creating a Comprehensive Plan; a community driven plan to articulate residents’ vision for the future and serve and as the Town’s official policy document. Planners from The Chazen Companies will be in attendance and seeking input at the Long Lake Winter Carnival on January 18th (from noon to 2 PM). They will be taking comments from residents, distributing surveys, and providing information about the planning process.

The Mt. Sabattis Recreation Center, Geiger Arena is located at 6 Pavilion Way across from the Long Lake Post Office on Deerland Road, NYS Route 30 in Long Lake, NY.  This event is free.  Parking available in the lower parking lot, along South Hill Road, Owls Head Lane and at the Post Office after 12p.m. There will be free shuttle service running starting at 6p.m. until 2am to and from the event location and pickups throughout town.  Call 518-524-3106 for a ride.  Open to the public.   Snowmobiles welcome!
