Bed Races

4th of July 2010… Bed Races Succeed!

Great Day Had by all in Long Lake, NY, July 4, 2010.

The Bed Races kicked off at 6pm on School Street. The DOT may have denied us for safety reasons and lack of detours, but the Hamilton County Sheriff and New York State Troopers were on hand to put their stamp of approval on the festivities. The Long Lake Rescue Squad pulled in with the ambulance and we were off to the races.

Eight teams gathered in the school parking lot.

The Rayome Family Entered with “Rayome University” Rumor has it a bed was snatched up at the dump and created and planned by the Rayome Crew.

The bed didn’t quite make it past the finish line.

6pm Bed Races WILL GO ON… in a new location, on School Street. We have trophies and prizes and judges to help with the return of Long Lake’s signature 4th of July Event. It may not be on the main drag, the runners may have to push up hill, but come on out to see what we have in store for you.

The Beach will be busy with Penelope the Clown, the Fire Department BBQ, and 4i Band rockin’ out until dusk. Lifeguards will be on duty until 9pm.

Bring your lawn chair, get there early, stay late and remember why we are celebrating. Please pay homage to the Independence of our Country and think of our service men and women overseas who cannot be at home to celebrate with us.

Bed Race Permit Denied by the Department of Transportation.

Bed Races will Go On At A New Location

The Long Lake Parks and Recreation department received notification from the New York State Department of Transportation on Friday, June 25 that the permit for the 4th of July Bed Races to run on route 30 was denied.   The 4th of July Bed Races were slated to run on the traditional route, last raced in 1992  from the Long Lake Town Bridge to the Long Lake Town Beach on route 30 at a distance of 2/10’s of a mile .

Town organizers quickly jumped on planning alternatives.  The race has now been moved earlier to 5pm.  Racers are to meet at the intersection of School Street and Route 30 for a mandatory meeting.

Traditionally as far back as 1982 the Bed Races have been held on the 4th of July on route 30 from the Town Bridge to the Town Beach.  The last bed race was held in 1992.   In keeping with tradition an effort was made to “bring back the bed races” to build up community spirit, attract tourists and to entertain the crowds amassing at the town beach in celebration of Independence Day.  The fire department sets up a BBQ, 4i Band from Binghamton will be playing classic rock and the lifeguards stay on duty well into the evening so families can enjoy the festivities and have a prime seat for the 4th of July fireworks.

The Town of Long Lake had applied for a NYS DOT special permit 33a to host the bed races on the 4th of July.  In addition the town had procured special insurance certification, received the support of the Hamilton County Sheriff, the Long Lake Rescue Squad and the New York State Troopers to help with traffic and crowd control.  The DOT cited the following reasons for denial:

“There are no reasonable detours for the event, the date and time of the event correspond with times that holiday travelers would be utilizing Route 30 and the event presents safety issues; the potential of individuals being injured is high.”

Organizers will be looking for a suitable location to hold the bed races, aiming to procure permission to do it on School Street into the School Parking Lot off of route 30 and starting the races at 5pm to allow enough time for racers to make their way down to the beach for the evening festivities.  Look for updates on #.

Long Lake 4th of July Bed Races Return

Bed Races in Long Lake from the 80's

The Long Lake Bed Races have been absent since 1992, at least the only evidence is a rather large trophy issued to winners “The Lakeside.” that will be given out to the first place winner.  Prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd & Best in Show.  Costumes, themes will be judged by Long Lake Secret Judges to be hand selected very very carefully.  These judges will be so secret, they may not even know whom the other judges are, they may not even know they are judges until the final judging.

Other 4th of July activities include 11am games on the Ball Field, Fire Dept BBQ on the beach, Penelope the Clown, North Country Kettle Corn and keep your fingers crossed for Strawberry Shortcake sale (I know I am keeping my fingers crossed)

On July 4, 2010, the 4th of July bed races return to Long Lake at 6pm. Expect traffic delays.

Look for music by the 4i Band on the Town Beach starting at 5pm.
