"Long Lake and other waters in the Town of Long Lake served for years as the principal highways and main streets of the community. It was natural, then, that the building of boats should become a leading occupation of the community. The well-known Adirondack guide boat is said to have originated there. George W. Smith succeeded to the trade from 1897 through 1930."
