Boat Parade Weekend and Durant Days in Raquette Lake

Explore Raquette Lake for a three day event celebrating the Birth of Great Camps! Architecture tours of Great Camps, cruises and community events are scheduled to take place Friday through Sunday, August 1st-3rd.

Durant Days kicks off on Friday by celebrating the birth of the Great Camps Architecture with a tribute to William West Durant. A special cruise on the WW Durant Cruise Boat provides guests with a luncheon and exclusive tours of Great Camps along Raquette Lake. The Durant will stop along the way for a visit to historic Camp Pine Knot. In addition Bob Milne, American’s own treasured Ragtime Boogie Woogie Pianist will be playing a short concert at Camp Pine Knot. For information and reservations, call (315) 354-5532.

On Saturday enjoy a 2pm concert at the Raquette Lake School featuring Joe Davoli & Harvey Nusbaum. These two present various traditional fiddle styles. Their fiddle repertoire comes from new and old, near and far. Old, as in the essential music for dances and entertainment before recorded music. New, as in tunes that meld world beat rhythms into melodies influenced by the old fiddle music. Near, as in the music originating right in our own backyard, sometimes called bluegrass, jazz or old time. And far, as in the Celtic styles which originate in Ireland and Scotland. Doors open at 1:30pm.

At 5pm near the Caboose just off the village Green, the Blues Master, Midnight Mike rolls in perform a set to warm the crowd up for the Annual Boat Parade at 7pm.Anyone can enter and prizes will be awarded to first place winners in each boat category along with a Best in Show! Call Pat 315-354-4070 for more info or to register a boat at Burke’s or Bird’s Marina. Saturday’s festivities will wrap up with a spectacular fireworks show at dusk right off the barge.

On Sunday, take a ½ price guided tour of Great Camp Sagamore, featuring 27 National Historic Landmark Buildings at 10am. There is a water taxi service to and from St. Hubert’s Isle from the village dock for The Annual Ecumenical Vespers service will be held at the Church of the Good Sheppard. W.W. Durant crafted a narrative of the Adirondacks that remains relevant to this day. Celebrate the birth of Great Camps Architecture in Raquette Lake to reflect on a day gone by when waterways were the highways.

Durant Days is a celebration of the rich history of architecture and it’s place in the historical landscape of the Adirondacks. Don’t miss out on tours of Camp Pine Knot, and St. Williams Church and Great Camp Sagamore. W. W. Durant had a hand in its development from the start, but especially after 1879, when tourism to the area exploded.
Fans of AMC series, Hell on Wheels, can take their own step back in time to discover the world of W.W. Durant, the son of Thomas “Doc” Durant, (as portrayed by Colm Meaney on AMC’s Hell on Wheels ) W.W. Durant is the architect and visionary who imagined a place where wealthy urbanites could escape the noise, smog and crowding created by the Industrial Age.

All aboard the W.W. Durant, Raquette Lake’s exclusive dining vessel with world-class cuisine and over 20 years of service. Saturday, August 4th:

2pm: at Raquette Lake Free Union School. Free concert featuring Wide Variety. “New Jersey’s Premiere A Cappella Group.” Wide Variety is a group of a cappella singers who take the best of R&B, rock and roll and popular standards, add their own blend of vocal harmonies and deliver an entertainment experience.
2pm: Poker Run. Village Green. For family fun and a great way to explore the local area, sign up for the Poker Run from 2-5pm. Collect your card, visit area businesses to get stamped and the winner with the “best hand” takes the purse.
5pm: Adam Reynolds, Acoustic Artist, performs on the Raquette Lake Village Green. Adam has been playing in Raquette Lake, Long Lake, Old Forge, Utica and Syracuse for the last few years. In 2012 he braved the Pittsburgh, PA, American Idol auditions and competed with over 30,000 contestants. Don’t miss Adam’s finale performance in the Adirondacks for Durant Days. Two days after his showcase Adam heads off to Marine Corps boot camp.

Sunday, August 5th

10am: Great Camp Sagamore. Half price guided tour of Great Camp Sagamore, featuring 27 National Historic Landmark Buildings.
2pm: Water Taxi to St. Hubert’s Isle
3pm: Vespers Service St. Huberts. Visit the historic island chapel for the Annual Ecumenical Vespers Service at the Church of the Good Shepherd. The island church was the summer chapel for many families significant in the history of the United States during the second half of the 19th century.

Durant Days is Coming!

Celebrate the 13th Annual Durant Days August 5th thru 7th in Raquette Lake, NY. Durant Days is a celebration of the birth of the Adirondacks Great Camps Architecture, which was born in Raquette Lake under the guidance of William West Durant.

In 2011, Durant Days, will bring concerts, games, parades, and fireworks to the village of Raquette Lake for an Adirondack weekend you won’t want to miss!

Kicking off the weekend will by W.W. Durant luncheon cruise and guided tour of Camp Pine Knot. Board from 9am until 9:40am, enjoy a guided tour of Camp Pine Knock from 10am – 11:30am, then finish it off with a gourmet luncheon on the W. W. Durant as you tour Raquette Lake. Tickets are $56 per person including tour and lunch. Ten dollars of every admission goes to Camp Pine Knot. Call 315.354.5532 for reservations.

On Saturday, start your day off with the Wide Variety concert at 2pm at the RL School. Wide Variety is a group of six a capella singers from New Jersey who have specially designed their repertoire and crafted their arrangements to give audiences the widest variety of songs and the richest harmonies. The concert is free and all are welcome. Doors open at 1:30pm.

Also beginning at 2pm is the annual Poker Run. Head to the Village Green to register at $10 a person and check in to various local businesses to collect your cards. Players turn in their best hand at the registration table at 5pm. All participants receive complimentary tickets to the WW Durant Moonlight Cruise at 10pm.

The Boat Parade passes by the Village Dock between 7pm and 7:30pm. Cash Prizes for the Best Dressed up, creative, boats.

End the busy Saturday will be a spectacular fireworks show over the lake at dusk.

Sunday Morning is a free tour at Great Camp Sagamore at 10am and later that day, the historic Church of the Good Shepherd will hold a public worship service on St. Hubert’s Isle. Transportation to the island will be provided for those without boats by Burke’s Marina from the RL Village Dock starting at 2pm. Vespers will be held at 3pm.
