2020 Hors D’Oeuvres Results Announced!

A buzz was in the air on Friday, February 21st for the Annual Long Lake Hors D’Oeuvres Tour the benchmark event for the Town of Long Lake’s Winter Wonderland Week.

Guests of the tour were invited to ride the Long Lake’s community “Little Bus” and visit the local restaurants to vote for their favorite appetizer.  Guests hailed from Columbia County, NY, Plattsburgh, Tupper Lake, Long Lake and Albany and other locales.  The participating restaurants included: The Adirondack Hotel, the Long Lake Diner/Owl’s Head Pub and the Long View Lodge.

With a good turnout, Long Lake looked to neighbor in Newcomb, to use their community bus to supplement transportation for the event.  Supervisor Robin DeLoria offered his ten-passenger bus to be used for the event citing he was happy to share services between the two upstate municipalities straddling Essex and Hamilton County.

Guests descended upon the venues one at a time, moving about the community to try three appetizers at each location.  Guests had a voting card to review and select their favorite at each venue. The judging was to consider each individual appetizer with overall impression, presentation, uniqueness, combination of flavors, pleasing to the palate and originality.

The Long View Lodge served a Chicken Pesto Puff Pastry, a Scallop Seafood Crostini and Bacon wrapped Meatloaf over Mashed Potatoes.  The overall winner for the Long View Lodge was the Chicken Pesto Puff Pastry with one guest saying, this was the favored selection, it should be on the menu and the dish was beautifully presented.

The Long Lake Diner/Owls Head Pub served each dish individually with a sorbet palate cleanser offered between each selection.  Dishes included Chicken Sausage Chili cup in a hand-molded tortilla, Bacon Bourbon BBQ, Battered and Breaded Pork Ribs  and Fried Green Tomatoes. The Chili Cup took top honors.  Comments remarked, “Execution at the diner was excellent, loved being served the dishes one at a time, and the flavors and the chili would be great to have coming off the trails. Loved the ribs too!”

The Adirondack Hotel served a Venison Slider, Smoked Duck with Brie and Smoked Salmon.  The Adirondack took top prizes for their Smoked Duck with Brie. Fans raving that the dish was a great combination of tastes citing the onion on the duck was a very nice touch.

Guests were impressed with the portions and were full by the end of the night.  Guests remarked at the great camaraderie of the company, the organization of the event, the chefs creativity and the excellent service.

The next foodie involved event in Long Lake will be in May during the Eat ADK Restaurant Week,  April 30th – May 7th.  More information will be available at www.mylonglake.com

Adirondack Hors D’Oeuvres Tour Results Long Lake

Participants in the 2012 Hors D'Oeuvres Tour Long Lake

On Thursday, February 16, 2012 the Town of Long Lake opened it’s doors for a special evening out celebrating the Chef’s of Long Lake.

Four year-round restaurants in Long Lake, NY located in the Central Adirondacks were charged with creating three appetizers which could be from their current menu or created especially for the event. Each guest was served exactly the same appetizer selections and voted on a scale of 1-7 using criteria including: presentation, uniqueness, combination of flavors, pleasing to the palate and originality. Voters were asked to try not to be swayed by personal taste and to consider if the food is well prepared, cooked properly and tasty. Awards are given out to each restaurant recognizing the best appetizer for each location.

Over 40 judges were shuttled around Long Lake starting at 6pm and were home by 10:30pm to try 12 different appetizers. Guests hailed from Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Newcomb, Syracuse, Columbia County and Long Lake. Everyone carefully critiqued and commented on the food served, the most common comment, “I wish I had more room!”

With 100% participation from our four year-round dinner service venues the 3rd Long Lake Hors D’oeuvres tour was a complete success. Participants raved: “Good, wow, comfort of home taste, tender and lovely, could make a meal out of this one.”
