2011 Year in Review Long Lake Style

What do you remember about 2011? Well already a day has gone by and I’m sure I missed something. So maybe you got to spend a lot of time in Long Lake this year, or maybe you kept in touch via updates and twitter and your friends and relatives. Maybe you drove down Route 30/28N and decided to spontaneously stay for the night and found a Barber Shop Quartet singing on the beach or Martin Sexton signing autographs. Long Lake is small, but makes the most of the seasons and even though we’re off the beaten path and not right off the railroad tracks or the Northway, we still have our fingers on the pulse (from a quiet distance)

The video is a timeline with both events in and around Long Lake and Raquette Lake interspersed with some images of notable news figures of the past year. Trivia is so popular an event, one of the upcoming questions may revolve around some of the images in this piece – so watch carefully.

What did we miss? I know you’ll be sure to tell me.

See you in 2012. Enjoy the show. Moonlighter’s Snowmobile Club Winter Carnival is coming up on January 14, 2012.. THINK SNOW!

Big Fish Ice Fish

Raquette Lake, NY Big Fish

Big Fish caught in Raquette Lake, NY on February 23, 2011. Weighing in at 17 pounds and 37 inches. Based on many facebook comments and deduction crowd consensus labels this a Lake Trout. Or a Monster. Congrats to local Long Laker Mike Lance for making the venture. Common questions.. how big was his auger? How did the tip ups not fall into the lake?

March Madness Begins

Extreme Cold Ice Fishing... Long Lake is way warmer!

Ice Fishing Derby on Sat, March 6th. Kids and adults team up to catch the sweetest, fattest prize of the Winter Season. Fish caught in waters in and around Long Lake are eligible for prizes. Never gone fishin’ in the winter before? Don’t let that stop you. Head down to the Spillway (that’s across from the town beach) Hook up with our fearless members of the Fish n Game club and get outfitted with tip ups, (adults must be licensed) and head out for the catch of the day. Food will be served. Cash prizes including consolation prizes.. just so the kiddies don’t cry (or the parents for that matter)

Sunday, March 6th is the final race of the New York State Vintage Snosled racing circuit. This is truly a ballsy spectator sport. Got fear? You’ll love watching these sleds pound the ice track at speeds of the most heart pumping caliber. Check out the boards to see if you know someone racing. Our own Gabe Farr completes his tour this season. Come out and root for the Long Lake team!

Got snowmobiles. We still have trails alive. Yes we do have some bare spots, but waa waa waa… just do it. So you may hit some bare spots on some well traveled places, just pack the tools and get yinnin’ The season isn’t over yet and Long Lake still offers miles and miles of free, GROOMED trails – thru the woods… best ride in the Adirondacks – if you don’t believe it.. it’s true. Ya dats rite. Love the kick ass thrill of the ride… you’ll still have fun… I promise. If you don’t.. waaa waaa waaa…

Park the trailer at Kickerville Mobil and gear yourself up. Visit all the local eateries, create your own adventure. Chapter one… LL Diner/Owl’s Head Pub.. get the eggs on… bust up the Powerline for a midday treat at Quack’s Long View Wilderness Lodge, do a Chinese fire drill and head back to the oldest working Hotel in the Adirondacks (that’d be the Adirondack Hotel)

Want to hear birds… just go outside. They are starting to sing and even tho Long Lakers eagerly anticipate the onslaught of mud season.. well guess what… Winter is NOT OVAH yet! Go skiing, snowshoing, go sledding… (the Geiger Ice rink is kind of out of commission.. sorry about that.. can’t help the beating sun) but the sledding hill rocks…

Corn on OUT! C You Soon…

Snow Plus Snow

Equals snow. We have it. Wet snow, packed snow. It’s winters February whisper, the wish we had been waiting for back in December to cover our stumps and rocks on our snowmobile trails. It is a huff in midst of a season of expectation.

We have our Adult/Kid Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday, March 6th. A team can fish water all around Long Lake. More details will be forthcoming. No registration fee, but cash prizes and a family fun event. Think of it as going to the beach. Bring the grill, the lawn chairs, the kids and instead of towels, bring blankets. Instead of floatie devices, carry tip ups, instead of parking in the lot, hop on the snowmobile to find your point of operations and start a snowmobile tail gate party.

March has been known to be the best recreational winter month… hard to believe as Spring time is due… but rumor has it labeled as the best kept secret of the Adirondacks and thought you should know… we will still be grooming trails.

On another note… my friends snowmobile burned up the other day on Long Lake. He thought his hands were getting really warm from his hand warmers and the next thing you know flames are bursting out from the undercarriage of the sled. He was just past round island. The fire dept chief arrived on scene relieved the sled didn’t melt thru the ice as the DEC would have to be notified. After the excitement died down the sled was retrieved… handlebars the only thing that remains. I don’t know what brand it was, but I do know it had just flipped to 600 miles… so it didn’t get as much wear as it deserved. My advice to anyone traveling… never sled alone!

Winter the New Summer Picnic

Ice Fish Drilling North End of Long Lake

Who wouldn’t want to go on a picnic in the middle of winter in Long Lake. Rare conditions this year make the possibility of a family picnic with bbq grill and hotdogs a real possibility on the flattened white frozen lake tundra. Go ahead get the drill and the tip ups and catch some fresh pike and have a pike patty cook off.
