Below is a list of steps the DEC and the parks department is taking to reduce the spread of COVID-19:

Camping changes: all state-operated campgrounds, cabins, and cottages are closed to overnight visitation through April 30. All visitors with reservations will be issued a full refund. New York State has also suspended all new camping, cabin and cottage reservations for the 2020 season until further notice. They are assessing campground status on a daily basis. If you’ve made reservations for the season beginning May 1, and it is determined your campground is safe to open, your reservation will be honored. However, visitors who wish to cancel an existing reservation may do so and receive a full refund.

Locally this will impact all reservations at Lake Eaton, Forked Lake, Golden Beach, Brown’s Tract, Lake Durant, 8th Lake, Limekiln and Tioga Point.  Reservations through reserveamerica.com

NYSDEC is closing access to DEC-controlled fire towers to the public.

MASKS
The Town of Long Lake is collecting homemade masks from volunteers willing to donate to our community members in Long Lake & Raquette Lake needing face coverings.

Anyone wishing to donate masks are asked to drop them off at the Long Lake Town Hall, 1204 Main Street, front door, located at the front entrance of the building or mail them to:

Town of Long Lake PRT
PO Box 496, Long Lake, NY 12847
Look for the box at the Long Lake Town Hall or the Raquette Lake Post Office
Masks are distributed on the honor system. Residents of are invited to pick up the masks, max of 2 per person. Like fruits and vegetables, if you touch it, then you keep it.

Kat Forsell will be coordinating the project in Raquette Lake and a box for mask drop off and pick up will be available at the RL Post Office.
We want to thank our community volunteers for helping us with this brand new program. We cannot guarantee masks availability.

If someone is in the foyer picking up their masks, do NOT enter until person exits as it is a cramped space. Please adhere to safe social distancing.

Update

We understand that not everyone is on-line so for those that aren’t regulars on Facebook, we know there is a need to get information to our most vulnerable citizens. Our Parks & Recreation department does make frequent phone calls to our seniors and we also work closely with our local meal site to hand deliver important informational flyers to our residents.

If there is a community wide emergency, we do have an automated telephone system on standby, ready to go, with our Long Lake & Raquette Lake residents and property owner contact information.

If you are a new resident or recently changed your phone number from a landline to a cell or you’d like to include additional contact number, lease sign up using our form below.  (scroll down!)

This is a work in progress so we know there may be duplication of emails, phone calls etc.  Please bear with us, we are doing the best we can and we do appreciate your feedback, and email it to longlake@mylonglake.com

Check on your neighbors, be well, stay safe.

Thank you to our community members handily crafting masks which are currently available at the Long Lake Town Hall & Raquette Lake Post Office for free.

PUBLIC HEALTH GUIDANCE TO SEASONAL RESIDENTS AND RENTAL PROPERTY OWNERS
APRIL 20, 2020

Hamilton County would like to provide some guidance as we prepare to welcome our second home owners back to the Adirondacks. In order to maintain the safety of the public we request that you consider the following information.

Second Home Owners and Snowbirds
• After you arrive, we strongly encourage you to stay at your home/on your own property for 2 weeks. We understand that during your travels you will be in contact with numerous individuals when stopping for gasoline, food, and to rest. This includes post offices, grocery stores, convenience stores, hardware stores, liquor stores, and other essential businesses.
• We do encourage you to use delivery options that many of our local businesses have in place.
• Bring supplies with you that will last you at least two weeks. Our local grocery and convenience stores are able to meet the demands of our current residents; however, a large influx of people will only limit the supplies available for all.
• Be hypersensitive to the fact that we have limited access to healthcare. Our local health centers are limiting visits and utilizing telehealth services to provide care to patients. We do not have a pharmacy in the county, and recommend setting up pharmacy delivery services.

Short/Long Term Rental Owners
• We discourage short term rentals including nightly and weekend rentals. We prefer that if you are renting out your facilities, please consider multi week or monthly rentals. We are sensitive to the fact that these renters stimulate our economy and provide financial stability for our residents.
• Long term renters should be advised that social distancing rules still apply. Gatherings greater than 10 people for any reason including vacations, parties and celebrations are prohibited at this time.
• It would be beneficial to supply your rentals with masks, hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes to promote good behavior.

Please remember to follow public health safety precautions including social distancing, compliance with wearing a face covering when in public, good handwashing and sanitizing commonly touched surfaces. Hamilton County statistics have been low, only 2 positive cases of COVID with no outbreaks of exposure, and we are all working hard to ensure the numbers stay positive.

Remember it won’t be like this forever! But for now, it is important to be considerate and follow these public health initiatives to slow, and eventually stop the spread of the Coronavirus.

Erica Mahoney
Director of Public Health

2020 Hors D’Oeuvres Results Announced!

A buzz was in the air on Friday, February 21st for the Annual Long Lake Hors D’Oeuvres Tour the benchmark event for the Town of Long Lake’s Winter Wonderland Week.

Guests of the tour were invited to ride the Long Lake’s community “Little Bus” and visit the local restaurants to vote for their favorite appetizer.  Guests hailed from Columbia County, NY, Plattsburgh, Tupper Lake, Long Lake and Albany and other locales.  The participating restaurants included: The Adirondack Hotel, the Long Lake Diner/Owl’s Head Pub and the Long View Lodge.

With a good turnout, Long Lake looked to neighbor in Newcomb, to use their community bus to supplement transportation for the event.  Supervisor Robin DeLoria offered his ten-passenger bus to be used for the event citing he was happy to share services between the two upstate municipalities straddling Essex and Hamilton County.

Guests descended upon the venues one at a time, moving about the community to try three appetizers at each location.  Guests had a voting card to review and select their favorite at each venue. The judging was to consider each individual appetizer with overall impression, presentation, uniqueness, combination of flavors, pleasing to the palate and originality.

The Long View Lodge served a Chicken Pesto Puff Pastry, a Scallop Seafood Crostini and Bacon wrapped Meatloaf over Mashed Potatoes.  The overall winner for the Long View Lodge was the Chicken Pesto Puff Pastry with one guest saying, this was the favored selection, it should be on the menu and the dish was beautifully presented.

The Long Lake Diner/Owls Head Pub served each dish individually with a sorbet palate cleanser offered between each selection.  Dishes included Chicken Sausage Chili cup in a hand-molded tortilla, Bacon Bourbon BBQ, Battered and Breaded Pork Ribs  and Fried Green Tomatoes. The Chili Cup took top honors.  Comments remarked, “Execution at the diner was excellent, loved being served the dishes one at a time, and the flavors and the chili would be great to have coming off the trails. Loved the ribs too!”

The Adirondack Hotel served a Venison Slider, Smoked Duck with Brie and Smoked Salmon.  The Adirondack took top prizes for their Smoked Duck with Brie. Fans raving that the dish was a great combination of tastes citing the onion on the duck was a very nice touch.

Guests were impressed with the portions and were full by the end of the night.  Guests remarked at the great camaraderie of the company, the organization of the event, the chefs creativity and the excellent service.

The next foodie involved event in Long Lake will be in May during the Eat ADK Restaurant Week,  April 30th – May 7th.  More information will be available at www.mylonglake.com

Local Chef Keith Wamback will teach a sushi class on Tuesday, May 7th in conjunction with EAT ADK.  Anyone showing a receipt from ANY participating EAT ADK restaurant in the region receives $10 off the class!

On Tuesday May 7th, there will be a  Sushi Rolling Class at the Town Hall taught by local chef Keith Wamback. Class is $20 or $10 if you show a receipt from any business participating in Eat ADK Week, from any town. Attendees will learn all the steps to make sushi at home, and leave with three hand-made sushi rolls, and a sushi rolling mat.

Keith began his career in the kitchen in Long Lake working at the Island Snack Bar under the tutelage of Mike Sandiford.  From there his cooking has taken him all over the country, including working in the high-end catering field for over ten years in Washington DC.  That experience exposed Keith to gourmet food and techniques, as well as offered the opportunity to cook for Presidents, including, Barack Obama and Donald Trump, as well as the Prince of England, foreign dignitaries, members of Congress, and movie stars.

With over 20 years’ Keith learned the art of sushi as the head chef/manager of a sushi restaurant in Fredericksburg Virginia.  Keith learned the tricks and techniques to making perfect sushi that he will pass on to sushi class participants.   Keith returned to Long Lake in 2018 to be closer to family and the outdoor sports he loves, and he can be found cooking at the Long View Lodge before he returns to his summer gig with the NYS DEC.

Check out mylonglake.com and the Long Lake Instagram social media at Instagram/mylonglake for updates and info on all the participating venues in the area.
