Winter Carnival January 18th

The Moonlighter’s Winter Carnival is on January 18th at Mt. Sabattis.

It kicks off at Noon with a Snowmobile Parade, followed by the coronation of two very special royal guests, bonfire, Cardboard Sled Racing Competition including the first stop on the Adirondack Cardboard Sled Racing Circuit (think NASCAR) In addition to that all ages will enjoy other activities including the Fireman’s Relay on skates, Ballon Chase, Corn Hole, One Shot Basketball, and a highly anticipated Broomball Tournament. Teams of six are welcome to sign up.

The event rounds out with a Fireworks Display. Usually the fireworks go off around 6:30pm, but all depends on the number of broomball teams.

The Long Lake Little Bus will be rolling from 4pm until Last Call. Phone is 518.323-5000. It will pick up all ages to transport guests to area lodgings, Mt. Sabattis and to any local address within Long Lake.

On Sunday the Long Lake Lions Club will be hosting the Northern New York Vintage Snowmobile Races starting at Noon on Jennings Park Pond.

How to maximize winter fun in Long Lake. Be prepared, dress in layers. Bring sleds, skates, extra clothes and socks if you have little ones.

12pm – Snowmobile Parade

Adirondack Cardboard Sled Racing Circuit
There are five Cardboard Sled Races in the Adirondacks. Participants willing to race in all five have a chance to win a really huge trophy and bragging rights for the year. House rules apply at each individual race.

Feb 15 – Old Forge
Feb 16 – Indian Lake
Feb 22 – Inlet
March 1 – Oak Mountain Speculator

Winter Carnival on January 19th!

The Long Lake Winter Carnival gets in gear and off the ground on Saturday, January 19th. The event leads off with a Snowmobile Parade and crowning of the King and Queen of the Moonlighter’s at noon.

The Cardboard Sled Race starts at 1pm and this year there is an added category for racers interested in participating in the Adirondack Cardboard Sled Racing Circuit. Old Forge, Inlet and Indian Lake have all agreed to host a special class just for this regional event. Racers for this event can race in the regular event AND the special class. Racers completing at least three of the four races on the circuits earn points for box decoration and race time and will be awarded the championship in Inlet on February 23rd.

Other events for the Winter Carnival include Adult Golf Drive, 1-shot Basketball, Kids Games, Ladies Frying Pan Toss (a perenial crowd favorite that has people on the edge of their seat) and the Broom Ball Tournament. The day rounds out with a bonfire and fireworks.

The Long Lake Little Bus is available to shuttle folks to and from the Mt. Sabattis Recreation area to ease up the congestion at the Parking Area. For a free ride starting at noon until last call – call 518-323-5000. This bus will shuttle folks around the area as long as it’s in Long Lake.

Long Lake Gears up for Cold Weather Fun

The Town of Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department announces a vibrant winter season filled with events aimed to please the entire family.

Say goodbye to all the Mayan Prophecies with the season kick off on December 29th, 2012. Yes, if the world doesn’t actually end, we’ll still be here and we’re having a Polar Bear Plunge to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Join the wild, adventurous, and hearty Long Lake Fire Department, Long Lake Rescue Squad and volunteer teams for a brand new event to finish off 2012! Plungers are invited to take pledges and raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Everyone over age 18 can participate, but you have to fill out forms and sign up by contacting 518-624-3077 for more information. It will be a crazy event, so get in on the first year so 20 years when you’re in your rocking chair you can tell all the grandkids… “I was at the very first one!” All plungers will have their blood pressure tested before the event to ensure the safety of all, but the plungers are going in at their own risk! See if they have enough guts to withstand the frosty cold icy waters of Long Lake! Don’t want to plunge, we need cheerleaders so come on down! You won’t believe what you see!


Ring in the New Year in Long Lake. The Long Lake Little Bus provides free transportation to all ages starting at 5pm. Kids ages 10 and up can go the the Geiger Arena for a Pizza, and Skating party. Adults can enjoy a leisurely meal out at the Cellar Restaurant and Pub 518.624.5539, the Adirondack Hotel 518.624.4700 or the Long Lake Diner/Owl’s Head Pub call ahead 518.624.3941. Locals say, be spontaneous and have your very own family reunion and ring in 2013 with a winter backdrop! Celebrating in Long Lake is memorable, and filled with great ways to dance your socks off!

Other events slated for 2013, Ice Fest returns on January 11th and 12th! On-lookers will enjoy hot toddy’s, ice installations and silly games at each location! Sponsored by the Town of Long Lake and local businesses.

Did someone say BACON? Ladies get ready for the Annual Ladies Frying Pan Toss at the Long Lake Winter Carnival on Saturday, January 19th. You have no excuse not to put that sled, snowmobile or all the winter gear on the trailer and come on up for one of the most fun events of the season. Get to know Long Lake and feel like a local! We promise, we’re nice! Broomball, Snowmobile Parade, Cardboard Sledding Box Race, Free ice skating all day, Fireworks! Long Lake is an escape from the noise and drudgery of the real world and we know because we live here! Once you experience the Winter Carnival you’ll be making it the family tradition for years to come, you’ll probably be looking at real estate before you’re done.

The Long Lake Little Bus rolls ALL DAY, starting at noon. That means FREE TRANSPORTATION. Leave the car at home, we’ll drive for you! Book your room today! Take the Little Bus out on the town and visit our array of stores to buy some new socks, Moonshine, a souvenir or a make a pit stop at one of our eateries to warm up with a cup of soup or hot chocolate if ya need it! (shhh… its a secret!) But we promise, you won’t forget the fun you had in a remarkable Winter Wonder Land. You don’t have to leave Mt. Sabattis (if you don’t want to miss anything) because the Long Lake Fire Department serves up hot, delicious yummy treats all day. Fireworks at 6:30pm and then it’s time to hit the town for a meal and a safe ride home! Bring the whole family!

If ya race your Cardboard Box this winter season in Long Lake, Indian Lake, Inlet and Old Forge – you get something special (ok we’re still working on what that is, but participant is eligible for a super cool trophy – so call us and we’ll tell you all about it!)

Moonlighter’s Winter Carnival Smashing Success

King and Queen Officiate the Opening Ceremony

On January 16, 2010, over 400 spectators were dazzled by the Moonlighter’s Snowmobile Clubs 9th Annual  Winter Carnival held at Mt. Sabattis Recreation Center in Long Lake.  Families hailed from as far as Cranford, New Jersey,  Paramus, New Jersey, Hyde Park, NY, Saratoga, Syracuse, Clifton Park, Plattsburgh and Buffalo. 

 The day started at 1:00pm with the coronation of the King and Queen of Winter Carnival Cliff and Shawnee Ross of Long Lake NY.  Cliff and Shawnee have been Moonlighters for over twenty three years.  Cliff is an active volunteer fire fighter for Long Lake and is very pro-active with the Moonlighter’s Snowmobile club and is passionate about keeping the sledding trails in good condition.  As an employee for the New York State DOT, Cliff plows our roads clear of snow and ice.   Shawnee Ross works for the Warren County School district, she is a member of the Long Lake Ladies Auxiliary working tirelessly to support the firefighters and fundraising for the Fire Department Building Fund.  Shawnee is often found teaching “Stampin’ Up” workshops  in Long Lake and sells her cards and stationary at local craft shows.   Cliff and Shawnee have five grown children. 

 The days competitive events included the Cardboard Box Derby, twenty one teams entered the competition.

The other events during the day included One Shot Basketball, Fire Equipment Relay Race, the Men’s Golf Drive, Dodgeball, Kid’s Balloon Chase, Goalie’s Day Off Puck Shot and the Broom Ball tournament where teams of five competed for five minutes each in a very physically grueling match up with over eight teams participating.

 The Ladies Frying Pan Toss is always a very competitive event and the build up this year was no exception with over 45 Competitors vying for the coveted first prize of $75.00.  Volunteer Mike Rivette of MDRM Industries instructed novices on the in’s and out’s of the throwing procedure and ensured no one stepped over the foul line.  The winners:

 1st Place Nicole Andrews from Long Lake, NY, 2nd Place Hillarie Dechene from Long Lake, NY, 3rd Place Kitsy Rockstroh from Clifton Park, NY

 Long Lake Diner/Owls Head Pub Owners and active Moonlighters, Paula and Jim Piraino were instrumental in staging the day of competitive events and encouraging participation from organizations and businesses in town to contribute and volunteer their time.

 The local businesses that helped offset the cost of the  organizing , planning and execution of the event included:

 The Long Lake Diner, The Town of Long Lake, Long Lake Central School, Long Lake Fire Department, Moonlighters Snowmobile Club, Wallace Contracting, Hoss’s Country Corner, The Cellar, Stewarts, and Quackenbush’s Long View Wilderness Lodge

 The finale of the day was a spectacular fireworks show at 6:30 that blazed and jazzed the  crowd. 

 The Fire Department served hot chili, homemade soup and hot dogs throughout the day and raised money for the Building Fund with a 50/50 raffle won by Donna Clark.

 The Town of Long Lake’s Little Bus operated from 3pm to 9pm to get people back and forth to the event and to enjoy the fireworks show.  Approximately 75 riders took advantage of the service throughout the day.

Rules for Cardboard Box Derby are as follows:

Sled Design Rules
Sled materials: cardboard, tape, paint and wax. – No hardware is permitted (wood, plastic, metal).

Evidence of any “illegal materials” will lead to immediate ridicule.

You may decorate your sled with paint, pictures, flags, etc. Feel free to wear costumes.

Costumes are allowed and are greatly encouraged.

Judging Criteria
The sleds will be judged in two categories: artistic and construction.
The combined scores will be added for an overall score. Please note: costumes may be considered towards the score.
