Winter approaches and the locals gear up for a busy season. Snowmobile Trails get prepped, bridges get re-decked, brush gets cut back, TRP’s are filed with the NYS DEC so Ice Fishing Derbies can be launched. Plans are hatched all over town to keep the weather snow machine maxed out to capacity.
Coming up at the end of December is the Feelin’ Long Lakey Wounded Warrior Polar Bear Plunge. Last year over 50 tough hearted souls braved the fierce bone-chilling cold to take the plunge. Teams raised over $7000 for the Wounded Warriors. If you are interested in signing up or pledging, please fill out the registration form and start collecting for our Wounded Warriors.
For Wounded Warriors returning from active duty around the world, the most difficult part of homecoming is adapting to the daily challenges of everyday life. The Wounded Warrior Project was established to provide tangible, practical support for the wounded, helping them to heal both physically and mentally.
Prizes will be awarded for Most Creative Costumes, Biggest Fundraisers, Best Team Theme and more to be announced.

Snowmobiling is right around the corner. Long Lake and Raquette Lake boast over 70 miles of trails and with the newly opened 7th Lake Mountain Trail, connecting to the Moose River Plains has never been easier. We’ll admit it’s a bit of a rough ride, but work was done over the summer to complete and make bridge access safer. This trail is narrow and extra caution has to be used while navigating it. This is not the super open, speed highway, but it definitely can get you from point a to point b. The trail is challenging, but please know the Town of Long Lake and the Inlet Barnstormers will have their grooming teams out on the trail working with the snow to get you the best possible trails. Looping from Long Lake to Newcomb, Indian Lake to Inlet and Raquette Lake has finally become a reality. If you are looking for a quieter, off-the beaten path location to stay where the trails offer incredible mid-week riding, Long Lake is definitely your destination. Winter Lodging is available: We have a variety of lodgings with quick access to snowmobile trails, lake for ice fishing and great birding areas. For reservations: Shamrock Motel & Cottages 518,624.3861, Adirondack Hotel 518.624.4700, Lakeside Cabin 518.624.9806, Corner Motel 518.624.3571,Akuna Matada 518-624-6430,Brook Camp 518. 624.4234.
Events aplenty. Look for the Geiger Ice Skating Rink to be open between Christmas and New Years Break and remain open thru the season. Free ice skating, plenty of skates to “borrow” and gliding around the ice under mother nature’s canopy, be it the snow falling or the stars glistening. Call 518.624.3031 for ice conditions. Introduce yourself to Opie, he’ll be handling the ice conditions, ice making and prepping for his 2nd annual Giant Snowman. Last year we saw the Iron Giant, we don’t know what he has in store for 2014.
Guided Snowshoeing, x-c skiing and winter hiking trips, will be announced during our Winter Expedition Series with Spencer Morrissey and Joan Collins in January. These trips offer excellent guided hikes into unique destinations. If you haven’t navigated in the woods before, or would feel more comfortable hitting the trails with an experienced guide, this program is for you. Regular guided trips can be as much as $350 per couple, these trips provide free transportation and knowledgable guides for $20 a person. Keep your eyes peeled for announcements.
